Japan stretches over 3,000 km from north to south, which means you can literally chase the seasons in a van. From snowy mountains to tropical beaches, each season has ideal regions for van life. Here are our region suggestions depending on the season you plan to visit.
NOTE: These are just for inspiration purposes. Any region can be great year‑long depending on your equipment and if you have specific goals like skiing, surfing, or hiking.
🌸 Spring (March – May)

⚠️ Golden Week Warning: Late April through early May is Golden Week — Japan's biggest national holiday period. Roads, campgrounds, michi no eki, and attractions are extremely crowded, and prices spike significantly. Accommodation and popular spots book out weeks or even months in advance. If you plan to travel during this window, book everything early and budget for higher costs. Alternatively, avoid the most popular tourist circuits and head to lesser-known rural areas.
- Kansai Perfect balance between nature and culture. Mountain roads in Wakayama and coastal routes are especially van‑friendly.
- Shikoku One of the best spring vanlife regions. Quiet roads, rivers, mountains, and ocean views. Ideal before summer heat arrives.
- Kyushu Volcanic landscapes, onsen, and wide‑open roads. Spring avoids the intense summer heat and humidity.
- Chugoku Underrated and calm. Great coastal drives along the Seto Inland Sea with many 道の駅 (Michi no Eki).

- Hokkaido Cool temperatures, long daylight hours, wide roads, and a strong vanlife culture. Probably the best place in Japan for summer vanlife.
- Japanese Alps Altitude keeps nights cool. Forest roads, lakes, and camping areas are plentiful.
- Tohoku mountains Less crowded than central Japan. Cool evenings and beautiful landscapes.

🍁 Autumn (September – November)

- Chubu & Japanese Alps One of the most scenic times of the year. Mountain roads surrounded by red and gold forests.
- Tohoku Autumn colors peak earlier than the rest of Japan. Ideal before snow arrives.
- Hokuriku Coastal drives mixed with mountains and cultural cities.

Japanese winter can be really cold, especially when traveling by van. During the winter (if you don't plan to chase snow) we recommend you visit the following regions:
- Kyushu Mild winters, plenty of hot springs, and scenic coastal roads.
- Shikoku (south coast) Rare snow, quiet roads, and ocean views.
- Pacific Coast (Wakayama, Mie, Chiba) Sunny weather and relatively warm nights.
